We Are All Up For Sale, But What Are We Worth?

Its that time of year when students (such as myself) are coming out of college and university. The problem is that its not two or three students, there are thousands on their way out looking for a job. We are now selling ourselves and are going to be on the market. Just like products on a shelf, each one will have a different worth. Its our duty as new, prospective employees to make sure we have top worth and can be an actual asset to a company.

So what can we do to make sure we are worth the buy?

Something every student should be working on is a powerful resume. To employers, we are just a student. Without a solid resume, your just a name on a piece of paper. The resume is very important, but you will also have an interview to nail (if you get the chance to). Its important to take some time and hone your interview skills. No matter what's on your resume, a sloppy and unprepared interviewee will not be worth anything. One last thing to think about are old bad habits. That's exactly what they need to be, old. You have to do what ever you can do to drop them and turn your weaknesses, into strengths.

Remember to keep in mind that its time to dust ourselves off and make sure we get bought. Good luck.

Inventors Than, Innovators Now

I was watching a program on new, young inventors. The ideas and designs being shown were amazing. All of these products will have a life changing impact on our society. With all that said, I couldn't help think that we shouldn't be calling them inventors, rather innovators. It feels like anything you think of has already been made but that doesn't mean it has been done right. I but my own blog in this question. Has a blog already been made of a students thoughts on marketing and his future? I could find hundreds of them in Kingston alone. I have not come to make a new product, instead I have chosen to create an insightful spin on student blogs.

You have to think of the old saying "I am not trying to reinvent the wheel". What you want to do is make the best wheel you can make. It may have already been done similar but has it been done right? Once you have made this wheel, you now have to sell this wheel. Will someone want to buy this product or does your consumer already have a wheel they use? All of these questions need to be asked when coming up with your idea. Remember even if you are in innovator, you in fact are a inventor.

Try to think of these steps before you want to invent something. Your invention could be anything. It could be a type of meal, device or service. This mindset can be successful for any product or idea. Don't dwell on the creating something new, think about creating something brilliant.

Motivation Nation; Wait Where is Everyone?

Its Saturday night early in my semester and I decided to come home to get the last bit of R&R that I will be able to enjoy before I am overwhelmed with school. My chest infection has just about finished up and I am back to just under 100%. We all want to be at that 100% mark but find ways to drop that number with small things such as a late night or early morning. We could have ate too much or haven't ate enough. It could be blaming it on someone else or another close to you. All these little effects build which is keeping us at a 80% or 75% area.

Is it the small things holding us back or is it really ourselves?

Motivation is that one thing you can look for over and over again, but never find. Although it may come naturally to others. Sometimes all you need is that small spark of motivation and the fire of production will burn forever. In the late months of 2011, I found my self in a physical fitness class. It was there which I might have learned the best lesson of the year and a something that I will not forget. What the lesson was is  " If you do something for three weeks, it becomes a habit ". You will want to do it and it becomes addictive. Three weeks. Thats a week shy of a month. You can almost count the days on your hands and feet.

If you find yourself without motivation or without that drive. Why can't you take it upon yourself to do this three week challenge. Whether its going to the gym, finishing a project or maybe something new. Give it your best three weeks and it will hopefully be the last three weeks that you have to worry about. After that you wont think about doing it, it will be now second nature. If you have anything you have been worrying about or overcome ? Share your experience.

Thanks for coming by, enjoy the rest of the weekend.

It's Going To Be A Long Journey, Lets Set Up "Basecamp"

I am part of the beloved integrated marketing communications (IMC) program at St. Lawrence College in Kingston, Ontario. This final semester we have changed our classroom into a real, running agency. I have been part of a marketing team before and have learned some of the in and outs of being a part of a team. Something new that has been implement for the agency that I haven't had the chance to use in the past is Basecamp.

For those who do not know what it is, it is a online project collaboration tool and it is a hell of a good one too. These past few weeks were my first introduction to the program and It has instantly become a staple in my work. I find a team can go from great to flat line if the communication falls short. This program eliminates many of those problems right away. The project that our team is working on is right there with milestones, completion dates and tasks. You can also log hours, create a whiteboard and become accountable for any task put into the project. Motivation can be hard sometimes for any group, but Basecamp will give you that boost you have been looking for. I am hoping in the future where every I work has a similar program built in or even better, they will already have a Basecamp account set up and ready to go.

Feel free to check Basecamp out to really get a sense of the program. Here is a link to their website: Basecamp
